One common reducing theme is lack of understanding of culture and sense of unfamiliarity. Both, “call it sleep” and “paper menagerie” touch on the fact that the newer generation of children don’t have understanding and knowledge of their roots. This leads to questioning because of the many things that happen in their “roots/culture” does nat happen in “modern/present” day which leads to questioning evidentially leading to a lack of identity among the plot in both stories.

One of the experiences discussed is language barrier and communication which can add to the difficulty of being with parents and have a general sense of belonging amount others. This can lead to looking for that in places which they have to assimilate. We can see this in David and Leo’s relationship in “Call It Sleep” as well as the relationship with Jack and his mom in “Paper Menagerie”.
