- What is a “Letter to the Reader” for? What should be included in this letter?
The letter to the reader is essentially a way of advising and developing you intention and purpose of the essay. It is part of the writing process. There are two things that should be included. Your intentions, purpose and what its meant to do for the readers as well who the readers are, the description of your writing process “ how did you narrow the assigned topic? What kind of planning did you do? What steps did you go through, what changes did you make along the way, what decisions did you face, and how did you make the decisions?” and lastly “How did comments from your peers, in peer workshop, help you? How did any class activities on style, editing, etc., help you?.
- In Giles’ article, what are some problems in the sample “Letter to the Reader?”
Some problems are that the writer doesn’t seem to have a good grip on what she wants her essay to do, that the writing about the personal experience isn’t enough to by itself be persuasive. Another problem is that in the essay it is not clear how she sorts out specific problems she encounters in the writing process.
- What did you think about the section “How it helps me (the instructor) help you?”
I think that as a student it is difficult to see how activities like these help the teacher instead of just creating more work for us. However this section provides the “how” that many students don’t understand or see.
- Name a time/s you used “reflective thinking” when doing some project or job (like Giles’ painting example)
